what is e f f i c e r e?

e f f i c e r e is the largest sculpture installation piece in the history of the petersburg regional arts center located in [petersburg va] the entire piece utilizes over 22 miles worth of bailing twine and includes four window installations and a main gallery installation spanning over 100 feet the main gallery exhibit is housed in the arts center's 8,000 sqft main gallery the project is a public representation of the magnitude of possibility the city of [petersburg va] holds

why and more importantly, why petersburg?

as always artists must stick together if they wish to survive and [petersburg va] is young it is a young artist's community brimming with excitement and opportunity but it needs some push and a little more motivation and a tad bit more determination so april and i figured we would construct a living breathing public service call for action to show the community the continued need for the arts apparently it worked because we have helped stimulate more local momentum for the arts

how was it made?

a lot of hard work
over the course of two plus weeks myself april and a team of volunteers cut wrapped and walked the twine twenty two miles all of the twine was hand woven around the columns by april and myself during a five day period we used scaffolding and ladders and a great deal of determination
the structure is self supporting and as visitors will see gravity has played a role in condensing the piece at the center points the piece weighs over 600 pounds and spans approximately 12 feet by 100 feet in addition all of the front windows were completely refinished including the uncovering and finishing of seven areas of original early 1900s maple floors the front foyer and all window displays were painted and cleaned

you mentioned a performance piece?

well no i didnt but yes there was a performance piece in the week leading up to the opening of
e f f i c e r e april and i and each day different volunteers walked the 8000 ft bails of twine back and forth on the streets of [petersburg va] as a public demonstration of our willingness to freely give of our time talents and energies to help [petersburg va] on its way to being a thriving arts community we asked passersby to simply observe our actions and then respond to them which they did either by helping hurting staring waving talking or participating

can i come see it?

ah yes as long as you come before april 6 2008 then you will have to look at the recycling facilities for it but if you can make it before then then come on it is at 132 n|sycamore|st [petersburg va]

we got a lot of positive feedback and we urge you to get involved in your communty
