High Lows
a documentary on coping with depression

In 1999, my family and I were in a severe car accident. Life had changed dramatically and instead of adapting to it I tried to ignore it. I created distractions for myself that started out as hobbies but quickly grew into obsessions. This project addressed those obsessions. The ten prints are self-portraits of myself as an adult reliving the memory of those activities. When my grandfather died in October of 2006, I noticed myself creating distractions again in order to ignore life without him. This time I was able to recognize them as distractions before they became obsessions. This project continues to serve as a reminder of all of the endeavors I once felt so strongly about. It also symbolizes my ability to close the chapter of the accident once and for all – a day I thought would never come.
