The idea for this project originated shortly following the first exhibition of A Gentleman Should… The same questions were posed for this project, but different answers were received. While the tie holds power in commanding instant respect, women are not afforded the same luxury with pearls. Pearls are often associated with ladies and do have a language all their own. Pearls however do not make the lady – the lady makes the lady. A lady is beyond definition and instead is an idea that is experienced. We all may have a different written definition of what it means to be a lady, but everyone I asked was still able to give me a name of one woman they thought of as a lady.
